Botulinum toxin - The medicinal aspects of botulinum toxin (the compound used in most of today’s toxins) weren’t discovered until the 1950s. Researchers discovered that, when injected into a hyperactive muscle, the compound blocked the motor nerves from releasing a certain chemical that allows the muscle to function. Over time, when the compound wears off, the muscle activity will recover. Today, there are different forms of purified botulinum that are subtly designed to have a range of strength and spread (the size of the area affected by an injection). These differences are useful in our practice, since all muscles have slight variations: People have different lines and muscle functions. Having new options gives us a more individualized approach to each patient.
Unlike fillers, which are used to fill deep creases and lines in order to restore volume, toxins are a bit more subtle in their effects. By relaxing muscles, the aesthetic result is smoother skin with fewer lines. At Naturally You Med Spa, we use toxins judiciously in order to allow natural movement and expression, while also restoring a younger, more relaxed visage. Too much BOTOX® can extinguish facial movement and it can take away the arch of the brows, and injecting every crow’s-foot will prevent your cheeks from elevating when you smile. In addition to treating wrinkles and fine lines, we also use BOTOX® to treat excessive or unwanted sweating, or to correct imperfections in symmetry. By strategically targeting muscles, we can improve facial aesthetics by raising certain areas (like eyebrows) or lowering others (like the upper lip, creating a less gummy smile).
While patients may see some relaxing and wrinkle reduction in the first 24 to 48 hours, don’t be surprised if it takes as long as 2 weeks to see final results.
For those who are considering toxin therapy for excess sweating within 5 days of treatment, underarms will reduce sweating and scalp line will no longer become frizzy after exercising.
“Fillers” is a term we use for the different families of injectables approved for adding volume to the face. The filler is injected into areas where volume has been lost (such as the apples of the cheeks or the backs of the hands), or where more volume is desired (under the eyes, in the lips). If you’ve lost volume, you want to give the volume back where you lost it. When applied by a skilled practitioner, filler can restore or enhance natural beauty with the utmost subtlety. In the early days, fillers would be comprised of fat or collagen.
More than any other aesthetic skill, fillers require the hand of an artist to achieve the best results. Our skilled injector know to never to use an injectable to fill a defect—we use it to treat the cause of the defect, resulting in a lifted and rejuvenated look. That is what’s fun about what I do. It’s about the patient who looks in the mirror after and says, that’s what I have been missing.
Rather than trying to turn back the clock with fillers alone, we consider the addition of injectables as one part of a three-dimensional approach to looking younger: You can look natural with layering of fillers and combining that with other techniques, such as toxin and either microneedling or chemical peels, without having surgery.
Smooth, plump lips are a coveted signal of youth. But as we age, a combination of sun damage, genetics, and repeated habitual movements (i.e. smoking, drinking from a straw) can all leave their mark. As collagen breaks down and bone recedes, small lines and wrinkles that used to form only when you’d pucker up suddenly frame your mouth year-round. Corners of the lips can turn down, flattening the lips. As these changes add up, your pout will become thinner and less supportive, contributing to a less-than-youthful appearance.
Full, younger-looking lips can be achieved at any age. Whether we are enhancing your lips, or simply replacing lost volume, we want you to leave our office looking like yourself. In order to get the most natural-looking results, we may use a choice of different fillers of variable firmness to restore shape while maintaining softness. Depending on the combination and technique, we can use fillers to individuate treatments: addressing fine lines, lifting corners, or plumping for volume.
The lips, like the rest of the face, need contour and shape. There should be definition of the cupid bow and the lower-lip cleft, giving the lip shape and sensuality rather than a large, ill-defined tube.
For those stubborn, delicate lines around the lips, we rely on specifically formulated fillers like Juvéderm Volbella® XC hyaluronic acid fillers that can normally last for six months or longer. Another noninvasive option is to use microneedling and chemical peels to treat the area around the mouth.
Microneedling is sometimes referred to as collagen induction therapy because of its proven ability to stimulate collagen and elastin. First introduced in the 1950s, it has since become perfected as a way of tackling collagen loss. As we age and these compounds begin to disappear, we may notice our skin becomes less tight, and fine lines form more easily. Through the process of neovascularization and neocollagenesis, the tiny holes created by small needles shock the skin into healing itself. This results in an improvement in skin texture and firmness, as well as small reductions in scarring, pore size, and stretch marks.
For those with skin conditions that need collagen stimulation, microneedling is an excellent way to allow the body to use its natural healing properties for beauty. It can be used to stimulate volumization, reduce scars and wrinkles, rejuvenate hair, and tighten tissue. It can also be used in conjunction with other procedures such as PRP and chemical peels to give additional benefits.
Immediately after the procedure, the treated area may be red and a small amount of pinpoint bleeding may occur. In the ensuing weeks, the skin will become firmer and more even in tone. If used to treat the scalp, it may take a few sessions before hair begins to grow with more fullness.
The more microneedling treatments you undertake, the more skin will be repaired. After several treatments, this could mean a whole new face.
While you may see subtle results after 1 treatment, we recommend 3 sessions, spaced approximately 4 weeks apart to treat the skin.
When performed for hair loss, additional microneedling treatments may be required.
Microneedling is a minimally-invasive technology that boosts collagen and elastin to maintain a youthful, radiant, plump complexion.
Hands age much of the same way that the face does: a loss of volume creates wrinkles, and sun damage thins the skin to cause hyperpigmentation, dryness, visible veins, and uneven texture. The sun breaks down collagen in the hands, leaving them wrinkled and creating dark spots. They’re exposed to detergents and chemicals all the time.
Youthful-looking hands are easier to achieve than ever before, thanks to creative uses of technology.
• Fillers are important for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and loose skin, as well as disguising protruding veins and tendons, which become more visible as we age. A sturdy filler can restore the lost volume, concealing these imperfections.
• To freshen tone and texture, our recommendations range from topical brighteners and sunscreens to microneedling and chemical peels to remove redness, freckling, and age spots.
All together, we can build younger-looking hands from the ground up. Why rejuvenate your face and let your hands tell your age?
Normally, sweating is the major mechanism through which the body cools itself. But as anyone with sweaty palms knows, that feedback loop isn’t always triggered by heat; anxiety, anger, and embarrassment are just a few of the ways our body gets this feedback loop wrong.
If you find that sweating is interfering with your activities, you’re not alone. Nearly 3% of the population shares this condition, with half of those cases involving the armpits.
When you find you can’t control sweating with antiperspirants, you may begin to seek alternatives.
For some individuals, excess sweating (hyperhidrosis) can be an annoyance, while for others it can be the sign of a more serious medical condition.
We may recommend a variety of solutions. For patients who are interested in disabling the sweat glands temporarily, we suggest injections such as Botox®
A common concern many patients have about Botox is that it might interrupt the body’s natural cooling properties. But this is not an issue, as the areas where toxins are injected (around the scalp, or under the arms) are not essential to the body’s cooling mechanism. Botox inhibits the eccrine glands specifically and has few side effects if given in a safe dilution and dose.
Before Kybella®, the only way one could effectively remove fat under the chin was with liposuction. Synthesized from a salt our own body uses to dissolve fat, Kybella®, naturally breaks down unwanted fat using the same mechanism. When injected under the skin, fat cells break down, and are no longer able to accumulate fat.
Kybella® is a minimally-invasive approach for sculpting the neck area. While Kybella is currently approved only for the neck area, we’re excited about the possibilities for this product in the future.
Once injected in your neck area, Kybella® starts destroying fat cells and increases local collagen production minimizing your double chin.
PRP - Popularly referred to by others as the “vampire facial,” platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are a popular anti-aging solution. Blood is drawn from the patient, and the platelets are separated and concentrated through centrifugation. The concentrated platelets are injected into the skin using injections and microneedling and are thought to help activate a healing mechanism in the body. Similar to stem cells, the platelets can help infuse new life into your skin, boosting natural healing.
In the past, PRP treatments have been a staple of orthopedic medicine, and used to heal injuries and burns. Our approach is to use it as another tool to help reinvigorate collagen growth. Additionally, we now use PRP on the scalp to stimulate hair follicles and lead to hair regeneration.
As a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator, Sculptra® works with your body within the deep dermis, rather than topically, to help revitalize collagen production and help restore your skin’s inner structure and volume. As the Sculptra® PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production. Rebuilt collagen strands begin gradually helping to restore facial volume and the look of fullness to wrinkles and folds.
Collagen stimulators are used to diminish facial wrinkles by helping to restore the deep, underlying structure of the skin.
Collagen is a key structural component of smooth, healthy-looking skin. As you age, your body’s collagen production decreases. In fact, you lose about 1% of collagen per year after the age of 18. This is when you may start to notice the formation of wrinkles. Luckily, Sculptra® can help, even if decades of collagen loss have already occurred.
VI Peel is specifically formulated to rejuvenate aging skin and help prevent future damage. The aging process can cause your skin to become lax, pigmented and rough. Sun exposure and environmental assault just adds to the problem.
VI Peel, is a simple, pain-free procedure. Aging is inevitable but the VI Peel can make a difference in as little as 7 days.
